From the delectable seafood that is cooked and served in local eateries to the numerous fishing villages lining the coastlines, angling is evident in every aspect of Greek society. It may be surprising, then, that fishing has just recently become popular with tourist and anglers!
Prior to 2015, there was no legislation enabling local skippers to offer angling excursions to fishing fans. This has now changed, so you can still gain a unique understanding of a lifestyle that has previously been off limits to outsiders. What could be more enticing than catching world-famous fish and discovering some hidden history at the same time?
In Greece, saltwater fishing is where it’s at. Casting your line here is so much fun because you’re almost guaranteed to catch the same species every time. Billfish and Bluefin Tuna are among the many delicious dishes on the menu, and that’s a great thing! We’ve highlighted some of our favourite fish across the country below.
Tuna are adored by anglers around the world for their delectable flavour and hard-fought traits. In Greece, Tuna are similarly popular thanks to their delicious taste and difficult-to-catch nature. According to reports, Tuna in the Aegean Sea weighing around 280 kilograms (617 pounds) have become even more popular. Tuna can be caught all over Greece, in all three seas. Tuna are most likely to be caught near shore in the summer, but they can also be tracked down in the winter months. You’ll just have to go a little bit further to capture them than in the summer.
Anglers employ a number of tactics to catch Tuna in their local waters. Also known as handlining, a traditional Tuna trip involves trolling from a ship or deep-sea jigging. If you want a real Tuna experience, however, try handlining. Make sure you buy some serious fishing gloves. You don’t want to snag a 200-plus pound beast without them! It is not possible to maintain or consume Bluefin Tuna in Greece, as they are very popular. You might, however, be able to eat and keep Albacore and Yellowfin Tuna if you go to Alonissos.

Greek Swordfish are renowned for their size and skill in reeling one in. They’re picky during the day and don’t bite, which makes them popular for drift fishing or trolling with live bait at night. When your fish bites, the real battle begins. Swordfish are vicious fighters, so you must bring plenty of fighting spirit and tough braided line. In Greece, Swordfish are popular for their table value and are a staple of local cuisine. However, they are also at risk because they are frequently fished for, resulting in population declines. This fishery can only survive if anglers release any creatures they hook.
Despite the fact that they’re not really sea creatures that have fins and a tail, we couldn’t leave out the humble Squid on our list. You’ve probably seen them on lots of menus throughout Greece and elsewhere! If your first impression of them isn’t exciting, we’re here to change your mind. To begin with, Squid are hunted in Greece during the fall and early winter, so you’re already upping the ante when it comes to the weather. Secondly, local captains prefer to hunt for them at night and during the evening, when they are more abundant. You’ll be keeping an eye out for these multi-limbed animals under the cover of darkness.
There are many locations across Greece where squid are found. Weed beds and reef edges are particularly attractive to them. Because of the large number of islands, pier fishing and fishing from the shore are particularly popular. Handlining is a common local fishing method that is frequently utilised to hook ’em. Many local residents suggest using light spinning gear and grabbing a Squid jig if they want to use their rod. Squid are becoming increasingly common catches for new anglers and families looking to fish together because they don’t need a boat to haul them in. However, this doesn’t mean that they’re off-limits for hardcore fishing fans – a Squid fishing expedition in Greece typically yields a lot of tasty table fare to fill your cooler. Even better, you can bring your catch to a local taverna and get a delicious fry up!
The fish listed above, in our view, are some of the finest you can catch in Greece. They are not, however, the only creatures you might encounter in these waters. For example, you might catch Little Tunny, Barracuda, Common Pandora, Grouper species, Mahi Mahi, and more. Saltwater fishing is the backbone of the Greek economy. If you want to catch freshwater fish, visit Ioannina in northwestern Greece, particularly if you are interested in Catfish, Whitefish, and Trout.
